Come Sunday at 12:01 a.m., when NBA teams can begin contacting free agents, Jason Kidd could get two calls from the New York area.
There may be mutual interest
between the 39-year-old point guard and both the Knicks and Nets.
When asked Monday what
he finds attractive about the Knicks, Kidd spoke of having championship-caliber
pieces such as Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire in place. He
also called Tyson Chandler, with whom Kidd won a championship with the
Mavericks, one of his favorite teammates.
"They've got a
lot of studs," said Kidd, who was participating in the inaugural Big Daddy
Oheka Castle Celebrity Golf Tournament in Huntington. "When you talk about
Carmelo, Amar'e, they've got pieces that can help you win. So that helps."
The Knicks could have
some salary-cap flexibility after an arbitrator ruled last week that Jeremy
Lin, a restricted free agent, and Steve
Novak will retain their "early Bird" rights. That
ruling, which has been appealed by the NBA, enables the Knicks to use their
midlevel and lower-level exceptions to sign other free agents such as Kidd.
"I haven't really
talked to my agent," said Kidd, who is coming off a season in which he
averaged career lows of 6.2 points and 5.5 assists with Dallas. "I'll talk
to him this week to see what the deal is. But I think [the Knicks] have shown a
little interest, from what I understand."
If Kidd, an 18-year
veteran who spent six seasons with the Nets, heads to Brooklyn, the Nets hope
it will be in a backup role to free agent Deron
Williams, whom they hope to re-sign. Williams reportedly has narrowed
his list to the Nets, who can offer him the longest and most lucrative
contract, and the Mavericks, his hometown team.
Kidd said he is
willing to play behind Williams, whether it's for Brooklyn or Dallas.
"I think to be
able to partner up with a young, talented point guard like that, to be his
backup, makes my job easy," Kidd said of Williams, who averaged 21.0
points and 8.7 assists last season. "So for me to be a part of that and
help him out as much as I can would be a great honor.
"He'll make a decision,
hopefully soon, and then everything else will fall into place after that."
